WEcan - environmentalists run for Canterbury Regional Council
I've been dissatisfied with Environment Canterbury ever since their head honcho spoke out against limits on carbon emissions, claiming that it would stunt Christchurch's economic growth. I think that the prospect of global warming sets very serious limits on the amount of growth we can allow ourselves, and that Environment Canterbury should care more for the environment our economy has to exist within.
There's a group concerned with water quality, hazardous substances, air quality and other environmental matters running for Canterbury Regional Council in the upcoming local body elections (see below to enrol to vote or check your enrolment details). So if you think you might be interested in voting for any of their candidates, their website is at wecan.org.nz

WEcan believes that:
Our children are entitled to breathe fresh air, play in our rivers and swim safely at our beaches without endangering their health.
Our Communities have the right to drink their local water supply that is protected in perpetuity.
Our Economy should be vibrant and diverse, nurturing our quality of life without compromising the region's long-term well being.
Our Environment must retain its beauty and the systems that form Canterbury's natural infrastructure, in order to sustain the future of our children, our communities and our economy.
