Activities for 26 September - 2 October

No events this week - but keep your eyes open for people competing in the Thievery Corporation competition, especially if you're wandering around the Cashel St area during the week ;-)

If you're registered to vote, you should be filling out your local body election ballots about now. I know of two groups of activists that have spun off from the globalisation/war/environmental protests and are now running for council: WEcan and Health Cuts Hurt are both standing candidates. WEcan stands for... uh, I've already posted plenty about them; just follow the links. HCH opposes cuts to health funding and the resulting drop in services, like the closure of Queen Mary in Hanmer and the cutting of 10,000 cantabrians from waiting lists.

Protesters Storm the Stage of the "Champion Canterbury Awards"

From Indymedia:
Protesters dressed in $2-shop suits managed to get into the conference, despite the heavy police presence, enjoyed a few glasses of complimentary wine and stormed the stage just prior to the award ceremony beginning. They had ample time to chant, scream and explain what they were opposed to. They also carried a banner that read "Don't Award the Capitalist Hoard".

The police that were outside intimidating the protesters panicked and quickly turned to race inside but ran straight past the three protesters as they casually made their own way out.

Win a booth at Thievery Corporation

From RDU:
To win this special opportunity we need evidence of some very special Corporate Mischief. Maybe you could send us a photo of a mate dressed as a cow in a fastfood restaurant or redesign a corporate logo so it says something foul or ironic, though these are just some lame examples that Spanky came up with.

Activities for 19 - 25 September

September 23: Corporate Backscratch Awards

From... umm, unidentified posterers:
While the council pats business fatcats on the back for being well-behaved capitalists at the Champion canterbury Awards, the people of Christchurch will present nominees with the awards they truly deserve. IncludingDress in your best corporate attire and bring your own award!

When? 6:30pm Thursday 23rd September
Where? Christchurch Convention Centre
Press release:
FOR IMIDIATE REALEASE
DATE: 12/09/04
TITLE: Canterbury Corporate Backscratch Awards

A group of concerned Cantabrians will be attending the Champion Canterbury Awards at 6:30pm on Thursday October 23rd to stage a protest against capitalism.

The group will hold the "Canterbury Corporate Backscratch Awards"
outside the Convention Center. This will be a loud, colorful ceremony that highlights just what a farce the "champion" awards really are. They believe that nobody should be awarded for exploiting, and making profit from the community, animals and the environment.

Some companies have been selected by the group to receive there own special awards. These are:

Crop and Food - The Bio-Hazard Award
"Crop and Food are polluting our environment with genetically modified organisms. This is an extreme risk to the future of Aotearoa. Since GE technology is unknown and unwanted, Crop and Food will be presented with the Bio-Hazard award," explains Tim Dunne.

Solid Energy - The Eco-Terrorist Award
"Solid Energy is destroying large amounts of the west coast environment in their quest for coal. They play a major part in global warming. Next year Solid Energy plan to expand their operation to Happy Valley, a home to giant spotted kiwi and the rare Powelliphanta patrickensis snail. For these reasons and more, Solid Energy will be presented with the Eco-Terrorist Award."

The Cancer Society - The Animal Torture Award
"With scientific evidence showing research from animals cannot be extrapolated to humans and even their own directors admitting so, you have to wonder why the cancer society continues to waste public funds on animal testing. This needless torture of animals is why the Cancer Society will receive the Animal Torture Award."

Interview with WEcan

I had a few questions for Richard Morley, spokesperson for WEcan. I'm basically sympathetic to WEcan, but I wanted to see where they stood on a few things. Here's the questions and responses (if anyone chooses to contact any council candidates with questions about their policies, could they please send the responses to me?

"Where Ecan can't - WEcan". Why don't you think Ecan can?

Many of the current councilors have been in their positions for at least 2 terms. They have had a fair chance to get things right but the stats speak for themselves. They are failing. Water quality is deteriorating. Water quantities are being over allocated. Mega landfills are being built in place of smart Zero Waste technologies and now... as a way to address the supposed shortage of energy in NZ, we are about to debate the merits of Nuclear energy.

What's wrong with investigating nuclear power?

2 answers here.
Firstly just generating more and more power is not going to solve NZ's energy problems. It is an extremely short-term and un-sustainable approach. We must, must, must learn to do more with less. Again the facts speak for themselves;
  • NZ has some of the cheapest energy in the world...and that is not a
    good thing.
  • NZ'ers are some of the biggest consumers of energy...and that too is not a good thing.

Why are so many houses still not insulated? Why are not all homes and businesses heating their water through solar water heating (approx. 40% of household energy usage)?

Secondly Nuclear is not the energy of the future...it is the energy of the last millennium so much so that European countries are actually decommissioning their plants. No-one, especially not NZ'ers want nuclear. It is entirely unsustainable...if only for the incredible waste it creates.

What are the limits to growth, and how do they apply to Christchurch?

Very simply the planets resources. The human race is reaching, and in many cases has surpassed the limits of nature...our life support system. The health of oceans, rivers, air and bio-diversity are all in decline. The availability of the earths buried resources are also rapidly in decline...of most note must be crude oil. Even the largest petroleum companies are saying 40 years is all that's left.

New Zealand, and Christchurch, must aim, long-term, to becoming more self-sufficient. This great 'Global Economy' will just not exist, at least the way we currently know it, once petroleum becomes scarce.

"Bush ready to seize more power"

This is a headline you will never, ever see... unless you trawl around on the grubby underbelly of modern capitalism looking for dirt (hint: there's a lot). Yet I open up my newspaper and find "Putin ready to seize more power" nestled in the world pages, describing in sharp detail how Vladimir Putin is using the recent terrorist attacks in Beslan to shore up his own position in Russia.

Maybe it's just my memory, but I don't remember any equivalent newspaper articles three years ago, when the USA's administration used the attacks on New York to silence domestic critics (bringing the avalanching globalisation protests to a whimpering halt), say "you're with us or you're with the terrorists", and push through increased powers for the President. Oh, sure, such articles existed, I just don't recall seeing them in the Christchurch Press. The Listener was outstanding though, I have to say. However, even it didn't look at the broad patterns and say "oh, the US admimistration is using sympathy and fear to overwhelm opposition to it in military, economic, and political bids for power." No, we had to leave that to John Pilger (a man routinely vilified by mainstream media) and others: "The real story behind America's war"

This is the pattern I see over and over again: if our official allies are flexing their muscles and trying to stare everyone down, the mainstream media talk about their resolution and courage. If it's our official enemies, they'll be demonised, and if they're more or less neutral in our books, we might get some balanced coverage. Maybe. So, for example, I heard National Radio's morning host ask a Russian spokesperson if the slaughter of children in Beslan was related in any way to the slaughter of forty thousand of Chechen women and children by the Russian military. I've heard others question the validity of Russia's war on terrorism, asking if cracking down harder on the Chechens will do anything other than drive them to greater and more desperate acts of terrorism. All of this was within one week of the atrocity.

It's the sort of reporting that's needed. It suggests that terrorists are driven to extremes by the horrible things that have happened to them, and that there might atually be something that the powerful can do to stop producing terrorists. But it's not the sort of coverage we usually get. From September 2001, all I really remember is the phrase "why do they hate us?" repeated over and over again. I think it was even a headline at one stage, but the mainstream media managed to avoid even the obvious answers.

The reliance on press releases and official sources in our country's reporting on the US' war on terror means that, no matter how balanced and objective our reporters are, they're accurately reporting american propaganda. I recall, when the book reviewer was looking at Arundhati Roy's latest collection of essays, she mentioned how it had opened her eyes to the use of language in the media: "you know, calling them militants and the US 'security'". Linda Clark (the host) responded as if it were some sort fo revelation, and explained that they just use the same language as is in the press releases. not that it changed anything: listen to the news and you have two vocabularies; one for allies and one for enemies.

Enemies are warbands, insurgents, militants, terrorists, radicals, Islamists, or even radical Islamic insurgent militia; allies are security forces or peacekeepers. You will never hear National Radio refer to the foreign armies in Iraq as "occupiers", nor will you hear themr refer to their opposition as "the Iraqi resistance". You will never hear the interim Iraqi government referred to as a colonial government. You will never hear the mercenaries referred to as anything other than "security contractors".

Nobody has any trouble understanding that, during WW2, the Vichy government in France were Nazi puppets, and the people bombing them were the French resistance; national heroes. But for some reason, this sort of simple truth eludes many people who look at Iraq. I recall another interview about three weeks ago, in which the interviewer asked "why doesn't the new Iraqi government have much support from the populace?" The response was that Iraqis don't think the new government has enough power to bring an end to the violence. "Hello?" I thought, "does this guy know that many Iraqis see the government as a tool of the USA?" I actually got an answer later in the interview, when the guy was asked about the upcoming elections at the start of next year. He said that they would be an improvement because the process for selecting the current government was seen as undemocratic and controlled by the US. Wasn't that relevant to the first question? I'm confused. I became more confused when he said it could be difficult to carry out the elections because the Iraqis have no tradition of democracy. Obviously, though, they understand it enough to feel optimistic about the upcoming 'more democratic' elections.

In the words of Calvin, "sometimes I think adults just pretend to know what they're talking about."

Another activist CD

Oh yeah, I also have a copy of "Distorted Morality - America's War on Terror". The amazon.com review sums it up quite well, saying "Distorted Morality deserves the widest possible audience":
The hypocrisy of the U.S. government is powerfully scrutinized in Distorted Morality, a scathing thesis presented by renowned scholar Noam Chomsky. Speaking before an intimate audience at Harvard University on February 6, 2002, Chomsky sets fair and logical parameters to his thesis (namely, we are all hypocrites and, for the purposes of debate, the U.S. government should always be given benefit of the doubt) before outlining, with academic precision and citation of real history (as opposed to biased written history), the reasons why America's post-9/11 war on terror is a logical impossibility.

This, according to Chomsky's carefully supported analysis, is because the U.S. government has been, and continues to be, a major supporter of state-supported terrorism, favoring retaliatory or preemptive aggression over mediation in the world court, and avoiding accountability by excluding itself from the globally accepted definition of terrorism.

Activist CD-ROMs! Woo!

October 5th: Filipino human rights leader touring

From the Philippine Solidarity Network of Aotearoa:
Marie Hilao-Enriquez is the head of Karapatan, one of the biggest and best known human rights groups in the Philippines, and travels the world on its behalf. She is currently an official observer at the Oslo peace talks between the Philippine Government and the Communists (there has been a civil war for 35 years).

She has accepted PSNA's invitation to undertake a speaking tour this year. Her topic will be "the Philippines as America's 'Second Front In The War On Terror' and the Impact on Human Rights."

The Bush Administration is running amok and using war as its first response in any situation it doesn't like. In the early 1990s, a massive people's movement ended nearly a century of US military bases in the Philippines. But Bush and his allies in the Philippines are using the "War On Terror" and the decades-old armed struggle being waged by Muslim separatists in the south as a pretext to get back in. Human rights have been trampled on.

We thank the many organisations and individuals whose generosity has made this tour possible. Our budget is $5,000 and money is still needed. Please make cheques to PSNA, with a note saying that it is for the Hilao-Enriquez Tour, and send to

WEcan - environmentalists run for Canterbury Regional Council

I've been dissatisfied with Environment Canterbury ever since their head honcho spoke out against limits on carbon emissions, claiming that it would stunt Christchurch's economic growth. I think that the prospect of global warming sets very serious limits on the amount of growth we can allow ourselves, and that Environment Canterbury should care more for the environment our economy has to exist within.

There's a group concerned with water quality, hazardous substances, air quality and other environmental matters running for Canterbury Regional Council in the upcoming local body elections (see below to enrol to vote or check your enrolment details). So if you think you might be interested in voting for any of their candidates, their website is at wecan.org.nz

WEcan believes that:

Our children are entitled to breathe fresh air, play in our rivers and swim safely at our beaches without endangering their health.

Our Communities have the right to drink their local water supply that is protected in perpetuity.

Our Economy should be vibrant and diverse, nurturing our quality of life without compromising the region's long-term well being.

Our Environment must retain its beauty and the systems that form Canterbury's natural infrastructure, in order to sustain the future of our children, our communities and our economy.

About the Lab

"You need an alias," said the Dabbler.

"Agent Orange!" I shot back.

"Perfect! Agent Orange you are."

"... wait, um, no? I can come up with a way way better one, hold on..."

"Ok, go."

"...

...

... nope..."

"So, you're Agent Orange and you can come on the show each week and talk about peace activism and stuff?"

"Yeah, but I don't think I'll be able to keep from talking about other stuff as well..."

So that's what I do, (almost) every week on RDU 98.5fm, in Christchurch, New Zealand. I try to find out about as many upcoming protests and meetings as possible, and talk about them for a few minutes at 4pm on A Sunday. I set up this blog cos there's only so much you can say in fifteen minutes of fame.
